Peter Goalby - 2022 - “I Will Come Runnin’"

(39:18; Explore Rights Management)

***

As one can tell from the cover art, this is the second of two releases which have been put together from recording Peter Goalby made after he left Uriah Heep but before he left the music business. I am pretty sure that what we have with these two are not albums per se, but collections from that period, and one would expect the better material would have shown up on the first of the two, and then this would be the best of the rest as it were. It certainly seems that way, as while Peter’s vocal chops are never in doubt – he truly is a wonderful singer – this material is just not up to par, and the drummer on the title track should be taken out and shot as instead of driving it along he is just dragging it back. When Peter allows himself to move away from formula and really thrown himself into it, such as “Rock ‘n’ Roll Crazy” it certainly improves, and while never essential it is great to hear him trying something different. To my ears this is compilation is not as strong as the previous one and certainly has not aged well. One wonders what might have happened if he had stayed with Heep, as he certainly shines when he has a band around him as this is never heavy enough and while his voice always shines the material just isn’t there. Not one to which I can see myself often returning.
