The Chemistry Set - 2011 - "Impossible Love"

(12:24, Fruits de Mer Records)

*****+

In the ongoing endeavors of the UK enthusiast label Fruits de Mer’s search for classic psychedelic music to reissue by way of releasing cover versions we find this production, the cover version in this case being Rolling Stones’ We Luv You, which takes up the B side of this 7 inch vinyl, while the main song is an original creation. The UK psychedelic pop band THE CHEMISTRY SET appears to be back for an elongated stay following the 20 years that passed between their second and third album. The 2011 edition of this band sports big drums and bass as the foundation for their songs, backed by digital strings, organ, folk-oriented acoustic guitar alongside wah-wah soloing, 70's style psychedelic guitar licks and occasional flurries from brass and sitar: catchy, groove-laden and modern, yet distinctly psychedelic in expression. Clean, melodic lead vocals are an additional treat, and in the case of the Rolling Stones tune covered also sporting some rather Beatle-sque vocal arrangements. A fine addition to the growing list of vinyl singles issued by Fruits de Mer Records.
