Eight Zero One (UK) - 1976 - "Live"

*****

This is one of the first supergroups (a band where only famous musicians play). Here the following well-known persons came together: Francis Monkman (ex-Curved Air, later Sky, solo), Phil Manzanera (ex-Roxy Music, later solo and various projects), Brian Eno (also Roxy Music, later solo) and Simon Phillips (ex-Jack Bruce Band, later Judas Priest and many others). As far as I know, this is the only album by this project, and it was played excellently. Each of the musicians explicitly showed his abilities of playing live. As for the music, it's an exquisite cross between Symphonic Progressive and Art-Rock of the Roxy Music variety. As a result, IMO, we've got the most musically ambitious and adventurous work Manzanera and Eno have ever created, including all their creations before and after 801. Nonetheless, since there are comparatively few complex arrangements here, I can’t rate the album higher than a merely good one.
