Monsieur Thibault came together in 2015 after Myriam Bovis (bass, vocals), Frederic L'Homme (drums, synths, vocals) and Paul Muszynski (guitar, vocals) met the previous year during the Forest Sessions (a short-lived music collective made up of members of the Lille music scene with the aim of composing an album in four to five days). They were soon joined by Philippe Delgrange (bass, vibraphonette, vocals) and 'Port-Cucu' is their second album, following on from the 2019 debut 'Go Gauthier!' and the '3/4 ciel' EP which was released in 2023. I started listening to this sometime after receiving it, and even without looking up the details I knew this was a Dur et Doux release, as they concentrate on artists who have a very RIO/independent mindset which is quite distinctive and these guys fit that mould to a tee. The closest artist I can think of in terms of mindset would be Zappa, as they move through the absurd to styles that are technically complex yet somehow it always seems simplistic and commercial, which is very much at odds with what I am hearing. Simple tricks such as bass lines switching between speakers creates a backdrop which allows the rest to build in a different manner, while much of what they are producing would not have sounded out of place in the underground independent scene of the Eighties yet somehow twisted into music which is both modern and uncompromising. Dur et Doux are one of a very few labels where I always take everything I am offered as I know the music will always be interesting and compelling, even when I know nothing of the band concerned, and that is very much the case again here as this is a fascinating release for fans of the avant garde who prefer the path less travelled. All these musicians can also be found in various other groups such as DLGZ, Manic Maya, Big Bernie, Starglider, Chien Bernard, Rougir, the Muzzix collective, StarGlider, Louis Minus XVI, and here they are bringing their collective skills into something which is humorous, absurd, epic, twisted and fun all at the same time.
